Crowley, a fascinating cult personality claimed to use a scientific method to study what people at the time called spiritual experiences, making “The Method of Science, the Aim of Religion” the catchphrase of his magazine The Equinox. Crowley moved to the United States in 1914, at the onset of World War I, setting up shop in New York. It was here that Crowley eventually became the head of a secret society know as Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO) .
This was the organization where two other infamous personalities were brought together … Jack Parsons and L. Ron Hubbard, their friendship beginning in 1946 in Pasadena, as members of the Agape Lodge, (the most likely forerunner of California’s famous hippie communes). Of course, the rest is history, or fate depending on your point of view, for in 1949, Hubbard began developing the theory of Dianetics, the source document for the so-called religion of Scientology, where you may achieve the god-like status of OT VIII for a cool $500K (estimated) or simply go here and get the “generic brand” for $35.
